Popular hair product recalled for bacteria contamination: Stop using ASAP. Kao USA Inc. issued a voluntary recall of select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, sold in 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz bottles, the company announced July 1.
What is Pluralibacter gergoviae?
According to research published by the National Library of Medicine, Pluralibacter gergoviae is “a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family” first identified in the 1980s in clinical samples and environmental testing in France and the United States.
Since then, researchers have linked the bacteria to cosmetic contamination cases, hospital-acquired infections and, more recently, the emergence of drug-resistant strains carrying genes tied to antibiotic resistance.
What makes the organism a recurring headache for manufacturers is its staying power. Studies have found P. gergoviae can resist parabens and other preservatives commonly used in shampoos, lotions and other personal care items.
According to Melbec Microbiology, a cosmetics testing firm, P. gergoviae has become “a real concern in the cosmetics and personal care industry” because of its preservative resistance and its potential to cause infection in vulnerable people.
Health risks
The FDA notice states the bacteria pose little medical risk to healthy people, though those with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infection.
According to Melbec Microbiology, infected patients with compromised immune systems can develop anything from eye and urinary tract infections to respiratory illness and, in severe cases, sepsis.
What to do if you have it
Anyone with an affected bottle is urged to stop using it.
Consumers can contact the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 800-333-2442 or email oribecomplaints@kao.com to report a reaction, ask questions or arrange a replacement.
