A Historic Milestone: Only the Third Living Designer with a Solo Met Show
Titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” the Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition places the British fashion icon in rare company. Galliano becomes only the third living designer in history to be honored with a solo retrospective at The Met, following:

Opening to the public on May 9, 2027—immediately following the Met Gala on the first Monday in May—and running through January 9, 2028, the exhibition traces Galliano’s career from his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection to his revolutionary eras at Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Maison Margiela.
Addressing the Legacy: Genius vs. Controversy
While celebrating Galliano’s theatrical brilliance, the exhibition is already generating intense discussion due to his 2011 downfall. Galliano was dismissed from Christian Dior and convicted by a French court for public insults after making antisemitic and racist comments at a Paris bar.
Galliano publicly apologized, attributing his conduct to severe addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. Following rehabilitation, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour championed his second chance in fashion, helping secure his 2014 appointment as creative director at Maison Margiela.

In an official statement, The Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed the gallery will “directly address the rupture caused by his conduct” rather than presenting a simple story of disgrace or redemption, examining how historical and ethical circumstances shape how art is received.

For nearly 15 years at Christian Dior, Galliano transformed luxury runways into immersive theatrical productions. Alongside the late Alexander McQueen, Galliano is widely credited as one of the final visionary designers who fundamentally reshaped modern fashion.
