Almost 30 hours after a deadly shooting at Brown University, the authorities in Rhode Island said Sunday night that they were still searching for the gunman and that they would release a person of interest who had been detained earlier.
At least two students were killed when a person entered a lecture hall and started shooting with a rifle on Saturday afternoon. Another nine students were wounded, with one in critical condition at a hospital.
The authorities said they had a person of interest in custody Sunday morning but the investigation, which also involves the F.B.I., took a turn when top Rhode Island officials announced at 11 p.m. that he had been released.
Col. Oscar Perez, the Providence police chief, said at a news conference on Sunday night that investigators did not find enough evidence to charge that person in connection with the attack, and that investigators are again searching for a person seen walking rapidly in a video released by the authorities.
Asked at the news conference whether the authorities believe the attacker is still in Providence, Mayor Brett Smiley said officials have no way of knowing. Attorney General Peter F. Neronha of Rhode Island said there was a lack of video footage from the campus. “There just weren’t a lot of cameras in that Brown building,” Mr. Neronha said.
