Banks and post offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The third Monday in January became a federal holiday in observance of the civil rights leader after President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on Nov. 2, 1983. The date is designated as a national day of service to remember the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
“America is a more democratic nation, a more just nation, a more peaceful nation because Martin Luther King, Jr., became her preeminent nonviolent commander,” Reagan said during the bill signing ceremony, according to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.
While most restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores will remain open on Monday, that will not be the case for banks, post offices, and the stock market – or government offices.
