Lions’ playoff chances end with loss to Vikings: ‘It sucks’

MINNEAPOLIS — As the 2025 season approaches, Lions quarterback Jared Goff acknowledged that he never envisioned a situation where Detroit would be unable to qualify for the playoffs following one of the most prosperous seasons in the team’s history.
However, as he left U.S. Bank Stadium on Christmas night, that grim scenario became a reality when the Lions were definitively eliminated from postseason play after suffering a 23-10 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings in their penultimate regular season game.
“It’s disappointing,” Goff remarked regarding the playoff absence. “We’ll think about the entire season after next week, but yes, it’s disappointing.”
The Lions (8-8) began the season with a 67% probability of reaching the playoffs, ranking fifth among all teams, according to ESPN Analytics. However, they have faltered, losing four of their last five games.
This defeat resulted in the division rival Packers securing a playoff berth, ensuring that Green Bay will at least have a wild-card opportunity.
“In the end, you have to give them credit. They executed their game plan well, and we weren’t prepared,” Lions right tackle Penei Sewell stated. “It’s as straightforward as that.”
Goff was taken down five times on Thursday, and the Vikings’ defense forced five turnovers from him (two picks, three fumbles), matching his career high.
Detroit recorded a total of six turnovers by the end of the game, marking a season high, having only registered eight turnovers through Week 16, the fewest in the league.
Goff fumbled during a snap in the first quarter, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who accrued 41 yards on 17 carries, lost a fumble in the second quarter. Goff also fumbled twice in the fourth quarter.
“They played well on defense. They executed their plan effectively and took advantage of some of our weaknesses,” Goff said, having completed 18 of 29 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown while under significant pressure. “They managed to get to us, often adding an extra rusher.”
Head Coach Dan Campbell expressed his disappointment over the loss and the absence of playoffs after the Lions achieved a franchise record of 15 wins in 2024. Nonetheless, they faced the challenge of losing both coordinators in the offseason and were unable to recreate the success of last year’s team despite a promising 5-2 start this season.
“I will be reviewing many aspects. I plan to analyze several factors since I dislike being away during the playoffs,” Campbell declared. “I know our players share the same sentiment. Furthermore, a loss involves everyone; it’s a collective responsibility, including mine. Therefore, I will always assess my own performance first.”
Detroit’s offensive line encountered difficulties without starting left tackle Taylor Decker, who was sidelined due to illness before the game, preventing the Lions from establishing a rhythm. Their only touchdown was achieved through a lengthy, 19-play drive that lasted over ten minutes, culminating at 11:13 in the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Goff to rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, who leaped to make the catch.

With eight defeats so far this season, Detroit has accumulated more losses than the total from the last two seasons together (27-7). Campbell stated that he is open to reshaping the team during the offseason in areas that require improvement.
Currently, however, the Lions are concentrating on their final game of the year against the Chicago Bears, aiming for a victory.
“[Lions GM] Brad [Holmes] and I will have numerous choices to consider, a lot of aspects to evaluate,” Campbell mentioned. “We will assess the specifics, the reasons, and the necessary improvements. We must enhance our performance.
“… I am aware that it doesn’t require much for things to become unbalanced. Not as much as one might assume.”
